Hi all, my name is Juleah (pronounced Juw-lee-uh) and I am proud to say that I am the artist behind Southern Misfit Studios, and I would like to tell you a little bit more about myself, my small business, and how it all began.

I graduated from the University of North Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Art Marketing (combo of an art and biz degree) in December 2021. To be honest, 2021 was not an easy time to graduate from college - post covid and all that. I have been teaching art since 2016 (I was 17, in high school, and saving for a car when I started) through local paint studios, but a lot of them closed during my last year of college. By the time I graduated college, I was fully self-employed and depending on my own art/private paint classes to get me by. While applying to grad programs, residencies, and jobs, nothing really fell through (again, not the most ideal time to graduate, people were losing their jobs at this point not getting new ones).

After a year or so of picking up odd jobs/trying to find my way in the world/decide what I wanted to do for work post-graduation, I referred to a photography project I made in college called Southern Misfits as inspiration for my small business name and mission statement. Southern Misfits comes from the idea of challenging what it traditionally means to be a Southerner, the opposite being a “misfit”, someone who doesn’t totally identify with the stereotypical morals of the South.

So… what do we actually do?

As of right now, Southern Misfit Studios is a mobile art studio based near the Atlanta area. We host events in the city and in metro-Atlanta, and truly, anywhere you’ll have us, we even travelled to Florida for some events last summer (and would love to do that again!).

We encourage community-building through the arts and make art-making more accessible by bringing the studio TO YOU.

At our most recent private event, I had someone come up to me after class to tell me that what I’m doing could be considered “Spiritual Healing”, giving people the resources to express themselves and be creative while humbly guiding them. So, I guess you could say we do that, too.

There are no limits to what we can do. With my 8+ years of experience teaching art, it makes me an expert at this whole art-teaching/hosting thing. Since I have been doing this for such a long time, and since a young age, I have this unique background paired with a passion for hospitality, community, travel and of course, art that makes me the perfect fit for this kind of work.

What are our goals?

I always envisioned Southern Misfits being it’s own clothing brand before it was a mobile studio, the studio just happened to make sense first. The ultimate goal is to build out a “Misfit Mobile” and host large scale events all over the U.S. with a built-out van/pop up shop, bringing art and artist opportunities all over.

FAQs

  • Nope! No skills necessary for our events. You will have a great instructor to guide you!

  • Go to our Booking Page and fill our a form! Yes, we can come to you, your home, your business, etc,.

  • I am the main lead instructor, so most of the time it will be me leading an event. However, I have about 3 other women artists on rotation that help out sometimes!

  • Private Events: You get to customize the date/time/class type/location and it’s just you and your group! We require a studio minimum of 10 people (it’s okay if less show, but you pay for 10 regardless).

Public Events: These are the events you can register for under our “Class Tickets” page. We normally collaborate with a small business to host an event at their location (bringing business to them, too!) You register for however many people are in your group and you will be painting in a class setting with other people who did the same thing!
