This was surprisingly our first time hosting an open studio concept like this. Our client had a pretty big group (45 painters) and they wanted to do an open studio class as a team building event. How it worked:

The first 15-25 minutes of class was dedicated to a quick live demonstration on different color theory and brush techniques. Everyone practiced mixing colors and using their brushes to create different textures. They created custom colors from a limited color pallet of primary colors with black and white. For this specific group, they requested that they got instruction on how to paint a “frame” for their canvas. The idea was that they would leave the middle of their canvas blank to later paint their interpretation of a specific team-building prompt. So the first half of class was instruction and painting the edges of the canvas, the last half was interpreting their team’s specific prompt and filling in the center. Everyone did something SO different and truly, these paintings blew us away! It’s amazing to see what people can do when setting aside 2 hours to take up space creatively.

Moving forward the open studio concept doesn’t have to have a specific prompt/add a frame, but I do think it added some direction and actually helped everyone not look at their canvases blankly and say “Well I don’t know what to do”. Sometimes having a box that you can decide to stay in or break out of is helpful! Someone even painted one of our instructor’s! Such a cool concept!! Please book us for more open studio concepts where we bring all the supplies/tools/instruction for you to create whatever you want!
